Kelsey Sullivan & Isa Franzini

Are you interested in a career in insights, but not sure where to start your search? Or even what to search for? Maybe you’re just curious about what a role in insights involves.

In this article, we’ll share the latest list of insights job titles and the most common responsibilities within these roles.

The latest list of insights job titles

As insights and market research professions have expanded in their breadth of methods and tools, so have their roles. Today, insights job titles, much like job titles in marketing or growth teams, are quite diverse.

For example, you can routinely see job descriptions that are nearly identical — but the job titles are entirely different. One might be seeking a “Insights Lead” and another a “Integrated Campaigns Lead,” but the responsibilities could be relatively the same.

So it’s important to note that while it’s good to be aware of the job titles you should be searching for, it’s equally as important to review the descriptions of the roles.

Common responsibilities for insights roles

A career in insights can shift and change based on the hierarchy of the role and organization of course, but in general, here’s what you can typically expect if you’re just starting out:

Data collection and processing

  • Collecting data from various sources such as surveys, databases and online platforms

  • Running or managing quantitative and/or qualitative research projects (incl. scripting surveys, inputting in discussion guides, etc.)

  • Preparing data for analysis

  • Cleaning and organizing data to ensure accuracy

Data analysis

  • Conducting basic statistical analysis to identify patterns and trends in data

  • Making sense of the data; understanding drivers, connecting dots, and spotting meaningful changes

  • Conducting market research to understand industry trends, competitor activities, and customer preferences

  • Analyzing market data to identify opportunities and threats

Collaboration and communication

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders such as marketing, sales, and product development to gather data and insights

  • Communicating effectively with team members to coordinate tasks and share progress

  • Seeking feedback from peers and supervisors to improve performance and deliverables

It’s worth noting that as you enter a career in insights, your role, responsibilities and where you sit in an organization can vary greatly depending on the industry and the company. In some instances, you may find insights teams sit within marketing, other times in a standalone function, or sometimes within a wider analytics department.

In regards to industry, if you find a role at a CPG company for example, your role would look very different than if you found a role at a creative agency, even if you have the exact same job title.

For example, at a CPG brand you could have the title of Insights Manager and spend your days running research on possible advertising concepts and optimizing based on your data, reporting those findings and interpretations internally. While with that very same title at a creative agency, you might have to mostly rely on desk research and speaking to external clients for added context. So the overall contributions would of course be similar, but your day-to-day and who you interact with will be entirely different.

Wrapping up

As we said before, these insights job titles and responsibilities may vary depending on the specific role, industry and organization.
